Driver ticketed in Vernon Hills crash

A 41-year-old man was cited for causing a four-car accident at Route 60 and Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills early Tuesday, authorities said.

Vernon Hills Police Officer Sharon Joseph said the unidentified man was westbound on Route 60 at 5:34 a.m. when he rear-ended a vehicle at Milwaukee Avenue.

That vehicle was hit hard enough to lurch forward into a third vehicle, which then hit the vehicle in front of it, she said.

The unidentified driver and passenger in the second car had to be extracted from their vehicle and were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in serious condition, Joseph said.

The driver of the vehicle that triggered the accident was also taken to Condell, Joseph said, but did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.

The driver in the third vehicle was taken to Lake Forest Hospital and released with minor injuries. The driver of the fourth vehicle was released at the scene, Joseph said.

Route 60 was shut down in both directions following the crash for about 90 minutes while the accident was investigated and cleaned up, Joseph said.

Police are withholding the name of the cited driver until the end of the investigation because officers are trying to determine if a medical issue was to blame for the accident, she said.

Vernon Hills Police were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Countryside, while police officers from Libertyville and the Lake County Sheriff's Office assisted in traffic control.
