Man gets 22 years for Addison burglary

A 39-year-old Gurnee man with multiple arrests for residential burglaries dating back to the 1980s was sentenced to 22 years in prison Thursday for committing the same crime again last year in Addison.

Juan Bueno was out on bond for another residential burglary arrest in Cook County when he was arrested in 2009 by Addison police, DuPage County prosecutors said.

Bueno was spotted by police responding to break-in on Lorraine Avenue on Aug. 31, 2009. They found Bueno leaving a house with stolen items. Police said he had stolen jewelry and photography equipment.

Following a brief car chase, Bueno eluded police when he ditched his moving car and fled on foot. Further investigation of the burglary led police to Bueno, who was arrested almost three months later.

“I would like to thank the Addison Police Department, particularly detectives Kevin Dempsey and Roy Selvick for their phenomenal work on this case as well as (prosecutors) Johnetta Sanks and Audriana Anderson for their work in securing a considerable prison sentence for this repeat offender,” DuPage State's Attorney Joe Birkett said.

Bueno's DuPage criminal record includes a guilty plea to burglary in 1990 and a resentencing in 1991 for that same crime after he failed to meet the conditions of his earlier sentence, according to court records. In 1993, he pleaded guilty to residential burglary after being arrested by Elmhurst police earlier in the year.

Bueno was sentenced to eight years in prison for the recent Cook County burglary and will serve that consecutive to his DuPage sentence handed down Thursday, prosecutors said.

Bueno must serve at least half of the prison sentence, according to state sentencing guidelines.
