Hampshire knocks off Woodstock North

At times, Hampshire’s boys basketball team looked like a squad playing for the second time in 24 hours. A scheduling quirk followed up a Friday night game with a Saturday matinee. But the Whip-Purs had enough energy in reserve to defeat Woodstock North, 68-46.

Tyler Watzlawick’s 16 points led 4 players in double figures as Hampshire prevailed in nonconference action in Woodstock.

The Whips started sluggishly, falling behind 5-4 before taking control with a 14-2 run late in the first quarter. Back-to-back 3-point plays by Watzlawick started the run, and it ended with 3-pointers by Pat Azizi and Tyler Crater.

“It’s a Friday night game, Saturday afternoon game, both on the road, so it was a little bit difficult,” said Hampshire coach Bob Barnett. “But to still win by 22. ... and this is the second night in a row we’ve got four guys in double digits.”

Crater finished with 14 points that included four 3-pointers, and Azizi added 13. Crater also had 7 assists. Shane Hernandez had 10 points for the Whip-Purs.

Jeremy Yoder came off the bench to hit a couple of key 3-pointers.

The Thunder made a series of mini-runs in the second half, but the Whips (15-4) always had an answer. Woodstock scored 6 straight points to make it 41-28 late in the third quarter. But a 3-pointer by Crater and a steal and driving layup by David Wilson restored Hampshire’s momentum.

Consecutive 3-point plays by Jordan Kempf helped make it 52-38 midway through the fourth quarter, but Azizi’s 3-pointer started a 9-0 run that put the Whip-Purs firmly in control.

Kempf came off the bench to lead Woodstock North with 9 points.
