Chicago schools has new chief executive officer

The Chicago Public Schools has a new chief executive officer.

The school board approved the appointment of Jean-Claude Brizard on Wednesday. Brizard's appointment takes effect Thursday and continues until June 30, at an annual pay rate of $250,000.

Talks are under way between representatives of Brizard and the school district to reach a final contract. Brizard's predecessor was paid $230,000 a year.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel tapped the 47-year-old Brizard to lead Chicago schools. The New York City physics teacher rose through the ranks to become school superintendent in Rochester, N.Y.

According to school officials, Brizard on Thursday will begin meeting with teachers, administrators, students and parents to gain insight into the issues facing Chicago's schools.

In a letter, Brizard told district staff he looks forward to working with them.
