Ex-Edwards aide talks about crumbling relationship

GREENSBORO, N.C. — An ex-aide to John Edwards says his relationship with the former presidential candidate began to crumble around the time Edwards dropped out of the 2008 race and his child was born to his mistress.

Andrew Young testified Wednesday that the ruse to hide Edwards’ child was growing intense in January 2008. Edwards had stopped returning Young’s phone calls and Young was growing tired of living with Rielle Hunter, the mother of Edwards’ child.

It was Young’s third day on the witness stand in the criminal trial for Edwards, who is accused of conspiring to use secret payments from two wealthy donors to hide Hunter. Edwards has pleaded not guilty to six counts related to campaign finance violations.

Defense lawyers are expected to cross examine Young later Wednesday.
