Bible-based beliefs not always precise

Welcome to our chauvinistic world. All four recent letters about abortion and contraceptives were written by male contributors (except one). All seem to be religious experts on the abortion subject, when in fact it is basically a feminine situation. I’m sure many of the ladies out there have strong views on this subject.

Abortion is and always will be a private and personal matter, between the individual(s) and the supreme deity. God is the judge of our actions, not man. On judgment day we will come face to face with the all-forgiving God. Period.

The diverse and multiple circumstances surrounding any abortion is enigmatic. Across the board regulations (religious or political) are basically unjust and unfair. Rape, fetal deformity and incest are in my opinion acceptable reasons for abortion.

The adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” can be applied to contraceptives. A vast majority of Catholics, from the very strict to “cafeteria” types, use them “religiously” (pun).

If no abortion takes place, adoption is an option. It can be more emotionally stressful than the abortion itself, to all persons, including the child. Keeping the unwanted child can also create problems in an established family: neglect, abuse, drugs, etc. Even single motherhood can be overwhelming.

Quoting from the Bible to cover one’s pro-life statements is very interesting. Since when are Catholics Bible experts? Some 70 years ago we were “brainwashed” and coerced into thinking biblical interpretations were not allowed because we were not qualified to do so. But today we are?

Since the Bible has been translated numerous times, and it is not in reality literally accurate. The translators are solely responsible for some “personal meanings” to some words. Do we really know precisely and exactly what the prophets or Jesus related? Very interesting.
