Aunt: Nephew charged in NATO plot was ‘harmless’

The aunt of one of the three men charged with planning to attack Chicago landmarks during the NATO summit says she doubts her nephew was knowingly involved in such a plot.

Barbara Chase says her nephew, Jared Chase, was active with the Occupy movement and traveled around the country to protest.

She says she learned early Saturday about his arrest in Chicago. Jared Chase and two others were charged with providing material support for terrorism, conspiracy to commit terrorism and possession of explosives. Police say they had materials to make Molotov cocktails.

Barbara Chase says her nephew had a “warped sense of humor” and “always seemed harmless.” She says his father died weeks ago, and the family was waiting for him to come home before holding a funeral.
