Schaumburg man killed in Route 53 crash identified

Authorities today identified the Schaumburg man who was killed Tuesday when the vehicle he was driving struck the back of a semitrailer truck on Route 53 near Higgins Road.

Peter Sabella, 36, who was driving a GMC Envoy, was traveling at about the speed limit when his vehicle collided with the rear of the semitrailer, which was stopped in the northbound lanes, according to a witness.

It appeared the driver attempted to veer onto the exit ramp at Higgins Road, but the SUV struck the back right of the semitrailer, the witness said.

Police said it was likely the driver did not notice the vehicles had stopped in front of him and he attempted to veer onto the exit ramp.

Sabella was trapped in the SUV after the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Bob Huber.
