Illinois reports 4,156 new COVID-19 cases and 71 deaths

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Department of Public Health on Friday reported 4,156 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 as it also said 58,357 doses of vaccine were administered to combat the coronavirus.

The number of doses administered Thursday is the most in a single day since a vaccine has been made available.

Public health officials say 887,845 doses of vaccine have been administered over the last six weeks. However, only 194,471 people have received the two doses required for full vaccination, about 1.5% of the state's population.

Illinois has seen 1.1 million COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, with 19,138 deaths, including 71 reported Friday.

The latest confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 were the result of 111,057 tests, putting the preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity rate at 5.4%.

As of Thursday night, 2,735 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, with 532 receiving intensive care and 297 on ventilators, according to the Department of Public Health.
