Police: Aurora man threw heroin out window before search

An Aurora man with a long criminal history threw heroin and other drugs out his apartment window in an unsuccessful effort to subvert a search warrant last week, according to police and court records.

Vincent Lewis, 31, faces felony charges of manufacture/delivery of 100 grams to 400 grams of heroin, manufacture/delivery of up to 15 grams of cocaine, and manufacture/delivery of 30 grams to 500 grams of marijuana, according to Kane County court records.

Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the charges stem from a search warrant the department's Special Operations Group served with help from Community Police and the police dog unit.

The warrant was served about 4:10 p.m. Thursday at Lewis' apartment on the 200 block of Plum Street on the city's west side, Ferrelli said.

"When officers made their presence known, Lewis broke a first-floor window and tossed contraband out of it," Ferrelli said.

Police later recovered the items, which included eight ounces of heroin, about a half-ounce of crack cocaine and 4.5 ounces of marijuana. Officers also seized $584 in cash. Ferrelli could not immediately specify a street value for the drugs.

Police arrested Lewis without additional incident. He was treated on the scene by paramedics for cuts on his hands and declined further treatment.

Lewis is being held at the Kane County jail on $450,000 bail, meaning he must post $45,000 to be released while the case is pending.

According to Kane County court records, Lewis was sentenced to 12 months in prison after arguing with his girlfriend in Batavia in August 2007 and kicking down her apartment door.

Before that, he served half a four-year prison term stemming from a 2005 arrest in Aurora on a charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, records show.

Lewis, according to court records and prosecutors' statements upon sentencing, also had felony arrests in 2004 for unlawful possession of a credit card and in 2000 for aggravated battery to a teacher.

He is next due in court on Wednesday. He faces six to 30 years in prison if convicted of the most severe of the new charges, with no chance of probation.
