Baseball: Grubb helps Lakes take winning playoff step
Matt Grubb struck out 13 batters and fired a 5-hit shutout with no walks, as Lakes' baseball team opened Class 3A state tournament action with a 2-0 win over visiting Woodstock in Lake Villa on Wednesday.
No. 4 Lakes had only 1 hit, a single by Michael Behrendt, who also scored a run.
The Eagles advance to their own regional final and will play at 11 a.m. Saturday against the winner of Thursday's game at Lakes between No. 5 Prairie Ridge and No. 12 Marian Central.
Carmel 3, Northside 0: At Vernon Hills, Jay Ward pitched a 3-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking two, and the second-seeded Corsairs won their regional semifinal against the No. 15 seed.
Sean Lynch and Jimmy Tarzon each had a pair of hits for Carmel (20-10), and Drew Wiegman singled and knocked in 2 run.
The Corsairs next play at 11 a.m. Saturday in the regional final against the winner of Thursday's game between No. 7 Richmond-Burton and No. 9 Vernon Hills.
Mundelein 4, Rolling Meadows 1: TJ Yakimisky doubled and drove in 3 runs to help regional host Mundelein prevail in a battle of Mustangs.
Brandon Janowicz drove in Jacob Johnson-Wright with the only run for 18th-seeded Rolling Meadows (10-16-1) in the first inning.
Mundelein starter Jonathan Hanscom allowed 6 hits and a walk but struck out 10 over 6 innings. Ryan Patel worked a hitless seventh to pick up a save.
Second-seeded Mundelein (23-8) advances to an 11 a.m. regional final against the winner of Thursday's matchup between Prospect and St. Viator at Mundelein.
Libertyville 7, Lake Zurich 1: At Libertyville, Griffin Murphy homered and drove in 2 runs for the host Wildcats in their Class 4A regional semifinal.
No. 3 Libertyville received 2 hits apiece from Andrew Kim (2 RBI), Luke Plunkett (RBI) and Ben Arnold. Riley Gowens and Danny Richardson each pitched 3 scoreless innings.
No. 14 Lake Zurich lost for the fourth time this season to Libertyville.
Grayslake Central 7, Senn 0: The Rams, the top seed in the Class 3A Lake View sectional, won their regional semifinal by forfeit.
Grayslake Central advances to its own regional final and will play at 11 a.m. Saturday against the winner of Thursday's game between No. 8 Johnsburg and No. 10 Wauconda.
Antioch 8, Woodstock North 1: At Woodstock North, John Petty and Patrick Day (2 RBI) each had 3 hits, as the Sequoits won their Class 3A regional semifinal.
Perry, Austin Delgado and Vincent Roszkowiak all doubled for No. 3 Antioch, which advances to Saturday's 1 p.m. final against the winner of Thursday's matchup between No. 6 Lake View and No. 11 Harvard.
Delgado went the distance on the mound, allowing 4 hits, while striking out six.
Carmel 6, Fremd 2: The host Corsairs earned a nonconference win Tuesday as both teams prepared for their playoff openers.
Lukas Galdoni and Jimmy Tarzon had 2 hits apiece for the Corsairs (19-10), and Galdoni and three Carmel pitchers combined on a 3-hitter. Galdoni and Brandon Banker doubled for Carmel. Banker and Austin Ehren each had 2 stolen bases.
Austin Higgins and Tommy Wingen drove in the runs for Fremd (15-12).
