Officials from Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Police Department plan to work closely with the juvenile justice system to prevent youth violence.
Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis says prevention is hard to measure but that police will focus their efforts on hot spots around the city.
Weis says police have prevented three shootings so far this school year. He says while police often can't stop the first act of violence, they usually can stop the second one.
Chicago Public Schools CEO Ron Huberman says the district's 2,000 security guards will be trained to work more closely with students to try to prevent violence.
Weis and Huberman attended a youth violence summit Tuesday that included representatives from law enforcement and the state's child welfare agency. More meetings are planned with community groups in the coming weeks.
