An inspector with Chicago's Department of Environment is charged with taking more than $1,000 in bribes from a property owner.

The U.S. Attorney's office says 39-year-old Michael Cease was arrested Wednesday after an investigation by Chicago's inspector general and the FBI.

Cease was released on $20,000 bond.

Cease allegedly told the property owner in September that asbestos had been found in one of his buildings. Authorities say Cease asked for $600 in exchange for false documents showing it had been removed, and another $550 to avoid a city violation.

A message left at a telephone listing for a Michael Cease in Chicago was not immediately returned Wednesday evening. It was not clear whether he has an attorney.
