Mattes all-around skills lead Prospect to crown

Chris Mattes won two events and the all-around title to lead host Prospect to the District 214 Invitational title in boys gymnastics on Thursday night.

Mattes took the pommel horse (8.8) and parallel bars (8.6) crowns en route to a 51.95 total in the all-around. Mattes was second on floor (8.9), still rings (8.2) and high bar (8.3) and third on vault (9.15) as Prospect scored 149.28 points to finish ahead of Elk Grove (130.38) in the six-team meet.

The Knights' Ben Rader won the high bar (8.8). Joe Napoleon was second in the all-around as he took third on floor (8.8), parallel bars (8.0) and high bar (7.8).

Prospect's Bobby Burger also finished second on the horse (8.7).

Elk Grove's second-place finish was led by Mike Jachura's title on still rings (8.4). Teammates Ed Hwang on horse (7.4) and Kamil Nytko on p-bars (8.0) finished third.

Buffalo Grove (124.2) took third as Steve Dugan won floor (9.1) and vault (9.3) and Jason Siebert was third in the all-around (43.7). Siebert was second on vault (9.2)-- and p-bars (8.2).

Rolling Meadows (121.92) finished fourth as all-arounders Marc Herff (41.76) and Riley Albers (37.86) finished fourth and fifth.

Softball

Emily Ott took care of the pitching and Nicole Eisenberg provided enough offense for Maine West.

Ott threw a 5-hitter with 14 strikeouts and 2 walks as Maine West (9-3, 3-0) beat visiting Deerfield in the Central Suburban North.

Eisenberg was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and 2 RBI.

St. Viator 8, Wheeling 4: St. Viator jumped to a 6-0 lead after 3½ innings as freshman Julie Sweeney tripled, doubled and had 2 RBI in the nonconference victory.

Danielle Sipiora and winning pitcher Melanie Slawny each had 2 hits and Emily Catanese drove in 2 run for Viator. Slawny had 4 strikeouts.

Elk Grove 11, Montini 1: Krystina Leazer threw a 4-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Elk Grove in the 6-inning nonconference victory.

Amanda Mertes, Amber Hane and Amy Charewicz had 2 hits apiece for the Grens. Hane tripled and drove in 2 runs.

Hoffman 13, Elgin 3: Alex Wulbecker went 4-for-4 to lead a 15-hit attack as Hoffman Estates (3-8) rolled to the 5-inning nonconference road victory.

Kelsey Pellus was 3-for-3 and Jenny Pellus, Rachel Marinoff and Emily Fett had 2 hits apiece. Natalie Miceli got the win for the Hawks.

Glenbard E. 8, Meadows 6: Rolling Meadows (4-5) rallied from three deficits and tied the nonconference game in the seventh. But a run in the bottom of the eighth wasn't enough as Glenbard East scored 3 runs in the top of the inning in the nonconference victory.

Bonnie Weglarz went 3-for-5 and Caitlin Adair, Maddy Urban, Connie Porters and Kim Liwag each had 2 hits as Meadows outhit Glenbard East 11-9.

Soccer

Alex Partipilo scored an unassisted goal as Rolling Meadows (4-4) won the opener of its soccer tournament 4-0 over Maine West. Katie Oden stopped 10 shots for the Mustangs

Prospect 1, Deerfield 0: Alex Moxley's first-half goal held up as Prospect and keeper Marietta Smith won their tournament opener.
