Firework debris causes early morning garage fire in Palatine

Improper disposal of firework debris was determined to be the cause of a fire that Palatine firefighters contained to the attached garage of a townhouse early Friday morning.

The call to the 1200 block of East Inverrary Lane in Palatine initially came in as a car fire at 2:23 a.m., but was upgraded to a structure fire while crews were on the way.

Firefighters arrived four minutes after the initial call and gained access to the garage on fire by removing the overhead garage door.

The fire was under control in 20 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Investigators determined firework debris had come into contact with combustible materials on the property.

Palatine firefighters reminded the public of the need for working smoke detectors and that all fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in the village.
