Wheaton man suffers smoke inhalation in house fire

A Wheaton man was treated for smoke inhalation following a Wednesday evening house fire.

Wheaton firefighters were called to the single-family house on the 200 block of South Prospect Street at about 8:30 p.m. for a report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire from the kitchen of the house.

The sole occupant of the house had managed to escape the home before firefighters arrived, but fire officials said the man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. His condition is unknown.

Fire officials said the fire was caused accidentally by unattended food cooking.

A damage estimate was not immediately available, but the house was deemed uninhabitable.
