Cary man to run Illinois PGA

Casey Brozek of Cary was recently elected the 23rd president of the Illinois Professional Golfers' Association of America by members at the Association's fall meeting.

Brozek succeeds Trey VanDyke of Riverside, who will continue to serve on the Illinois PGA Board of Directors as Honorary President.

Succeeding Brozek as vice president is Mike Scully of Elgin, who served the past year as secretary of the Illinois PGA.

Jim Opp of Palatine was elected secretary.

In addition, four new members of the Illinois PGA Board of Directors were sworn into office.

Brozek, 39, has been the PGA head golf professional at Crystal Lake Country Club for the past 10 years. A PGA member since 1999, Brozek has served on the Illinois PGA Board of Directors since 2004, Born in Green Bay, Wis., Brozek attended the University of Kansas, where he earned his degree in communications and was recognized as an NCAA Academic All American.

“The Illinois PGA is excited as Casey begins his term as president,” said Michael Miller, executive director of the Illinois PGA. “His dedication to the advancement of the Illinois PGA and its membership has been truly inspiring. There is no doubt we will continue to benefit from his leadership as president.”

Scully, 45, is the PGA director of golf at Medinah Country Club. He was elected to PGA membership in 1999 and has served on various committees. Scully attended the University of Illinois, where he played football on the Illinois Big Ten Championship team and earned a degree in hospitality management.

Scully has been at Medinah since 2004, previously serving as the PGA head golf professional at the Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla. He was honored as the 2008 Illinois PGA Golf Professional of the Year, the highest honor bestowed on a PGA professional.

Opp, 60, is the PGA head golf professional at Bonnie Dundee Golf Course in Carpentersville. Elected to PGA membership in 1985, Opp has served on the Illinois PGA Board of Directors for the past six years. Opp has been honored with the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Illinois PGA Horton Smith Award and the 2009 Illinois PGA Golf Professional of the Year award.

The new members elected to the Illinois PGA Board of Directors for three-year terms: Jami Brighty, 33, of Northbrook, the PGA assistant golf professional at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest; Chris Gumbach, 38, of Bartlett, the PGA head golf professional at River Forest Country Club in Elmhurst; Nick Papadakes, 38, of Wadsworth, the PGA head golf professional at Old Elm Club in Highland Park.

Andy Phelan, 31, of Antioch, the PGA director of golf at Wynstone Golf Club in North Barrington, will serve a one-year term on the board.
