I've been trying to schedule a meeting with U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam since May 20 to discuss health-care reform. Several telephone calls and e-mails later I still don't have a commitment for a specific meeting date and time.

As a politically engaged citizen, I find the debates between DuPage County party leaders ("How about a debate to cap off war of words?" June 12) fascinating - they provide a transparent outlook on the state of partisanship in the county.

Once again, as the Illinois legislature plays a game of "chicken" with the budget, they shamefully hold hostage the most vulnerable population in the state, those who least have the ability to speak for themselves or express their needs.

As usual, I read the Daily Herald as I do each morning. I was particularly attracted to "An Obvious Place to Begin Cutting" on the June 18 Opinion page.

Another Flag Day has come and gone. I was driving the neighborhoods on Flag Day and was rather disappointed in the lack of U.S. flags on display and other signs of patriotism.

Joseph O'Day's June 10 letter, in which he claimed to be astounded by my ignorance concerning stem cells, was interesting. I was impressed by his using two words I had not heard before (totipotent and pluripotent) in explaining the difference between adult and embryonic stem cells.

I know that part of the problem between automobile drivers and bicyclists stems from jealousy - I'm paying zero dollars for gasoline and don't need a gym membership for exercise.
