State Sen. Meeks to announce mayoral run

Minister and state Sen. James Meeks is among a growing list of candidates set to formally announce this weekend that they're running for mayor of Chicago.

Spokesman Bryan Zisis says Meeks will make the announcement Sunday at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel is holding a similar event Saturday. And Democratic Congressman Danny Davis' campaign is inviting people to a Sunday morning event at a downtown Chicago hotel where he will announce.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said in September he wouldn't seek a seventh term in the February election.

City Clerk Miguel del Valle and former Chicago school board president Gery Chico have thrown their hats in the ring. Former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun plans an announcement soon.
