Suspect in Buffalo Grove mailbox vandalism caught

Buffalo Grove police arrested a 20-year-old man they believe vandalized 41 mailboxes along village streets earlier this week.

Jordan M. Weiman, of the 200 block of Downing Road in Buffalo Grove, faces 41 counts of criminal damage to property, a Class A misdemeanor, stemming from the vandalism spree early Tuesday morning.

Police said someone drove through several village streets about 2:30 a.m. knocking over mailboxes with a car. The mailboxes — along Havard Lane, University Drive, Downing Road, Selwyn Lane, Eton Court, Palmgren Court and Westchester Road — were either destroyed or damaged, police said.

Later that evening, one of the victims called police and informed them he found a portion of a vehicle bumper with license plate attached lying next to his damaged mailbox, police said.

Officers contacted the plate's owner, who informed police that her 20-year-old brother, Weiman, took her car without her permission, police said.

Police then interviewed Weiman, who admitted he became upset and struck the mailboxes with his sister's car, police said. Weiman told officers he accidentally ran over the first few mailboxes then out of frustration kept going, police said.

Weiman will appear at both the Lake County and Cook County courthouses on the charges, which are punishable by up to a year in jail and $2,500 fine.
