Illinois prof weighs in on Japan nuclear issues

URBANA -- A University of Illinois professor says the likelihood of a Chernobyl-style disaster in Japan is "basically impossible."

James Stubbins is head of the university's Department of Nuclear Engineering.

He and other international experts say there are serious dangers in Japan, but a fire and environmental release like at Chernobyl aren't likely.

The second hydrogen explosion in three days rocked a Japanese nuclear plant Monday. Authorities have been pouring sea water into three reactors at the plant after cooling system failures in the wake of Friday's massive earthquake and tsunami. At least 10,000 people have died.

Illinois has 11 nuclear power reactors, more than any other state. Nuclear experts say several are modeled after the damaged reactors in Japan, but the risk of similar danger in Illinois is low.
