7-year-old injured in Gurnee motorcycle crash

A 7-year-old boy who was hurt in a Gurnee motorcycle accident Saturday has been transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge from Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, authorities said Sunday.

The boy was the passenger on a motorcycle driven by his mother, who also remained hospitalized Sunday at Advocate Condell Medical Center.

No information on the conditions of the boy or his mother were available Sunday.

The accident occurred at 1:16 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Delany Road and Route 41 when a 2006 Kia struck the motorcycle ridden by the mother and son.

On Sunday, Gurnee police issued the Kia's driver, Brendan Hoffman, 29, of Antioch, a traffic citation for failure to yield to the motorcycle, which was making a left turn.

The collision ejected the boy and his mother from the motorcycle, and they landed underneath another car. They were both wearing helmets, which probably saved their lives, said Gurnee Fire Lt. Heath Graham.

It took about three minutes to free the mother and son from underneath the car using the Jaws of Life, he added.

Two other people were injured in the accident, but both refused medical assistance at the scene, Graham said.
