Senate OKs cameras targeting speeders in Chicago
SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Senate has approved using cameras to target speeders in school zones in Chicago.
Lawmakers passed the legislation despite concerns that the “Big Brother” measure was more about generating revenue for the cash-strapped city. It now goes to the Illinois House.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel pushed for the speed cameras as a safety measure. Emanuel called the Senate approval a “victory” for families.
Lawmakers predict putting the speed cameras in Chicago will result in them spreading around the state. They also say the cameras will be a problem because lawmakers will hear complaints when their constituents drive in Chicago and get ticketed.
A number of lawmakers reluctantly voted for the measure despite the concerns that were raised because they wanted to make streets safer for children.
