Police: Mount Prospect woman threw infant
A 33-year-old Mount Prospect woman has been charged with aggravated battery to a child after police say she threw her 6-week-old baby to the floor early Monday, fracturing his femur.
Veronica Perez, of the 900 block of N. Wheeling, has been charged with a class X felony, meaning she faces from six to 30 years in prison if she's convicted. Probation is not available.
A Cook County judge set bail at $30,000 Wednesday for Perez, who told police she became frustrated when she was unable to stop the infant from crying after he awoke about 4:30 a.m. Monday, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Walsh.
She told police she “snapped” and threw the baby, who struck a car seat and the tile floor, Walsh said. Initially, Perez told her husband, who was sleeping at the time, that she picked up the baby and heard a “snap” but later admitted to officers that “she lied to everyone,” Walsh said.
The baby is being treated at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The woman's 23-month-old child is staying with relatives, Walsh said.
Perez, who has no criminal background, next appears in court on Dec. 2.
