Glen Ellyn man charged in Elgin bank robbery

A Glen Ellyn man has been charged in the Dec. 20 robbery of an Elgin bank.

Dane R. Phenegar, 22, was charged with one count of bank robbery two days after, authorities said, he handed a teller at Elgin State Bank, 1001 S. Randall Road, a note stating he was armed with a handgun and demanding cash from the drawer.

Phenegar left the bank with $4,000 without displaying a weapon, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

St. Charles police arrested Phenegar on Dec. 22. Authorities are investigating a possible link between the Elgin robbery and robberies at banks in three other communities. Phenegar is a suspect in Dec. 5 robberies at Fifth Third Bank in Wheaton and First State Bank in Geneva, along with the Dec. 9 robbery of a TCF Bank in Glendale Heights, authorities said.

Phenegar is being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.
