Cary man killed in crash on Route 12

A 57-year-old Cary man was killed in a four vehicle crash on Route 12 in Kildeer Monday afternoon that injured three others and closed the roadway for more than three hours.

The crash occurred on Route 12 just north of Quentin Road occurred at 2:39 p.m., and a portion of the roadway near the intersection remained shut down until about 6 p.m., officials said.

An off-duty firefighter arrived at the scene before paramedics and immediately called for further assistance because multiple victims were trapped in the vehicles, according to the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department.

Thomas Wilcox, the driver of one of the vehicles, was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Lake Barrington and was pronounced dead shortly after, said Lake County coroner Artis Yancey.

A second victim was taken to Good Shepherd in an unknown condition and two others were taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, also in an unknown condition, according to fire officials.

Two other people injured in the crash refused treatment at the scene.

Emergency crews had to cut victims from three of the four vehicles. Crews from seven area fire departments assisted the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department.

The Major Crash Assistance Team was on the scene assisting Kildeer police with the investigation, said Lake County sheriff's Lt. Christopher Thompson.

An autopsy on Wilcox is scheduled for Tuesday.
