C. Ind. county to demolish aging county grandstand

MUNCIE, Ind. — Delaware County officials are moving ahead with demolition of the aging, unsafe grandstand at the central Indiana county’s fairgrounds.

The Star Press reports that Delaware County’s commissioners awarded a $12,550 contract to a local company to demolish the grandstand, which was built as a temporary structure in 1948 following a fire.

An inspection last fall had shown that the structure in Muncie was unsafe due to deterioration over the past six decades. Officials hope to have the new seating area in place in time for this summer’s fair activities.

Last month, the commissioners awarded a Columbus company a $498,000 contract to build and install new bleachers under the grandstand’s roof. County officials are still debating whether that roof will be stripped of lead-based paint and repainted or replaced entirely.
