West Chicago mayor on life support

West Chicago Mayor Mike Kwasman is on life support and has been unconscious since suffering a heart attack Saturday, officials said last night. Kwasman was eating lunch at a West Chicago restaurant Saturday when he suffered a major heart attack. The 65-year-old is listed in critical condition at Central DuPage Hospital. He is “in the fight of his life,” according to statement released by the city. Full story.

Friends remember Judith Katz

Colleagues of Judith Katz, who died Sunday a day before she was set to stand trial on obstruction of justice charges, hope she will be remembered for her work with day care and early education centers over 35 years. Katz, who was suffering from cancer, was the owner of the Lincolnshire day care center where a 16-month-old was thrown to the ground, causing injuries that killed him in 2009. Katz was a member of the Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame. Full story.

Senate Republicans derail ‘Buffet rule’

Senate Republican shot down the proposed “Buffet rule” Monday, which would have forced those making over $2 million yearly to pay a minimum of 30 percent income tax and would have phased in higher taxes for those making $1 million per year. President Barack Obama denounced the vote, while Republicans said it was a distraction for the nation’s real problems and was a political move. Full story.

Military to conduct exercises in Arlington Heights

U.S. military personnel will land helicopters at the vacant Chicago Sheraton Northwest in Arlington Heights on Thursday, most likely at night, police confirmed. Police were not told of what type of military operation is involved, but the developers that own the property have been allowing law enforcement agencies to train there. Full story.

An OK day on tap for spring, though if not a bit cool. It’s 41 degrees right now, but temperatures will climb to about 57 degrees before the end of the day. It will dip back down to 41 degrees again tonight, but climb to about 70 degrees on Wednesday. Full story.

Traffic

An accident with injuries is causing delays at Route 53 and Kimberly Way in Lisle, and Butterfield and Winfield roads in Warrenville. Delays are still taking place in Mount Prospect on northbound Busse Road at Route 62 where a sewer collapse is blocking 2 right lanes. Left turns are still prohibited from northbound Busse Road to westbound Algonquin Roads. The repairs will take place through April 30. Full story.

Hawks’ Shaw to hear league’s verdict today

Andrew Shaw will hear today whether he will be suspended for tonight’s Game 3 against Phoenix after running into Coyotes goalie Mike Smith in Game 2. Smith played the rest of the game and later said he was “100 percent,” but he was held out of practice Monday. Shaw’s teammates came to his defense arguing he was going for the puck, and Shaw says it was incidental contact. Full story.

White Sox blow it late

The White Sox blew a 4-2 lead in the top of the ninth, then the Orioles blew the doors open in the 10th to win it 10-4. Sox closer Hector Santiago gave up to solo home runs in the 9th inning to let the Orioles back into the game, before pitchers got pounded in the extra frame. Full story.
