More transparency needed in Aurora

Today, transparency in government is more important than ever. Considering the latest development in Dixon, Ill., transparency might have identified the financial mishandlings years ago. Each year, the city of Aurora awards a number of no-bid contracts to local companies. Is this a benefit to the citizens of Aurora or is it a detriment?

I would like to see the companies being awarded no-bid contracts listed on the city’s website. Aurora residents should know what companies are doing business with the city. It should be disclosed the type of services that are being conducted and the amount being charged. Disclosure and open policies limit any opportunity for mischief.

Also, companies being awarded no-bid contracts should publish any type of political contributions made to any elected city official, including the mayor.

It is a concern to see the same companies being awarded major contacts with the city each year with no transparency. Why are certain companies continuously being awarded no-bid contracts? What are the dynamics with those companies being awarded the contract? But the most important question we need to ask is, “How are our tax dollars being spent and why?” Just because it is legal does not make it right. Listing companies that have been given no-bid contracts allows other companies an opportunity to be more competitive, and as a result, will best serve the people of Aurora.
