Help clean up the beach

Volunteers are needed to join the Alliance for the Great Lakes annual September Adopt-a-Beachâ„¢ cleanup, part of the International Coastal Cleanup. Volunteers can join cleanups in their area that are open to the public, or lead their own event. Beach and shoreline cleanups involve thousands of volunteers to remove trash and collect data on their findings at the event at selected areas in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 15. Beach adoption is open to everyone, from individuals and business groups to community groups and school groups. More than 15,000 pounds of trash were collected last year. Register at www.greatlakesadopt.org. To lead your own event in Illinois or Indiana, contact Katie Larson, (312) 939-0838 x222 or klarson@greatlakes.org. Visit www.greatlakes.org/adoptabeach.
