A controlled burn to rid Braeburn Marsh of invasive cattails has been scheduled for next week. Applied Ecological Services will clear the vegetation Monday through Wednesday if weather permits. If it doesn't, the company will try again Nov. 30 to Dec. 4.

After six months of not finding a way to shore up Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez' budget, the Kane County Board will decide next Tuesday if they should bail Perez out with $1.2 million of last-minute miracle money.

A 63-year-old Aurora man faces up to 37 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a child he was baby sitting. A Kane County jury late Tuesday convicted Jerald E. Spring on one count of predatory criminal sexual assault and four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

A Chicago has pleaded not guilty to charges he sold drugs to undercover officers in the Western suburbs. Michael A. Mattix, 46, of the 1900 block of North Sayre Avenue, was arraigned Wednesday in front of Kane County Judge Thomas E. Mueller, who set his next court date for Dec. 11.

A black-and-orange Gary Fisher brand BMX bicycle was reported stolen from in front of the St. Charles Public Library Oct. 30, police said. The bike was left unlocked and leaning against the building just outside the main entrance.

The Kane County Board won't wake up from its budget nightmares even if it finds $1.2 million at the last minute to help Sheriff Pat Perez' budget in 2009. Once attention turns to 2010, the county board will quickly have to address its impasse with Circuit Court Clerk Deb Seyller or risk déjà vu in November 2010.
