North Chicago 14-year-old charged with having cannabis during traffic stop

Waukegan police say they found small bags of cannabis on a 14-year-old boy during a traffic stop, and that he told them he was selling the drugs for $5 each.

The unidentified juvenile from North Chicago was taken following his arrest Saturday to the Hulse Juvenile Detention Center near Vernon Hills, Waukegan Police Cmdr. Gabe Guzman said.

Because he is a juvenile, he is only petitioned with a crime by police, but not officially charged with a crime until he appears before a judge in juvenile court, Guzman said.

Guzman said the boy was a passenger in a car involved in a traffic stop in the area of 8th Street and Lincoln Avenue in Waukegan.

The juvenile was frisked by officers, Guzman said, and eight individual bags of cannabis packed for sale and distribution were discovered.

The juvenile was taken into custody, Guzman said, and told officers he sells the bags of cannabis for $5 each.

The vehicle he was in was being driven by an older sibling, but the sibling was not charged after a K-9 responded to the traffic stop, Guzman said.

The 14-year-old was released into the custody of a parent. His next court date in unknown at this time.
