14 arrested in underage drinking bust

Elgin police arrested 14 underage drinkers Tuesday night at the home of one of the victims injured in a shooting last week that killed two young men.

Police said they observed conspicuous underage drinking taking place at the house at 133 College St. while patrolling the neighborhood shortly after 7 p.m.

Police have provided extra patrols in the Gifford Park neighborhood since the shooting.

With the consent of the homeowner, police entered the house and arrested 10 people between the ages of 17 and 20 and four people younger than 17.

Police charged the arrested minors with consumption of alcohol by a minor. Police did not say if there were any adults of legal drinking age at the house.

A neighboring house was the site of the shooting on Thursday that killed 18-year-old Julian Mescote and 21-year-old Francisco Franco and injured three others.
