Schaumburg brothers band finalist in Famecast.com contest

How will Schaumburg brothers Brian and James Serra afford their rock 'n' roll lifestyles?

If voters give their band, Face Time Police, enough love by 11 a.m. Monday, a $10,000 award could help.

The duo is up for best metal band against four other finalists in Famecast.com's online talent contest. You can see the Serras' performance at vote at the Web site.

"Honestly, we deserve this because we try to do everything different and unique," Brian Serra said.

With no record company backing, Serra, 27, lays down drum and guitar tracks on a computer at home to create the music he performs with his 18-year-old brother.

The video for the contest, recorded Monday in Austin, Tex., was the first time the current lineup has played in front of an audience. The Serras recruited musicians from other local bands to fill out the band, even surviving a bassist flaking on them two days before the performance.

Though the band draws from metal influences, its music also features piano, acoustic guitars and touches of hip hop.

"We're able jump genres drastically," Brian Serra said.

By day, he's photographer for a West Chicago real estate firm in West Chicago. His brother just graduated from Schaumburg High School.
