Yellow bass, walleyes active on the Chain

Outdoors notes

"It's an unusual condition going on right now," says Fox Chain fishing guide Darrell Baker.

Baker is referring to the size of the yellow bass that he and his guide parties have been taking from the Chain. Baker said his customers caught quite a few yellow bass up to 12-inches.

That is remarkable news simply because the one-time glut of Chain yellow bass is now down to a trickle. Baker also noted that the number of large walleyes continues to be added to the service's tally, especially fish in the 6-8 lb. range. If interested, contact Baker at 847 337-5559.

Here's what is happening elsewhere:

Lake Michigan: The salmon bite continues, though it's slowed somewhat. Out of Northpoint, boats working 120 feet down are taking kings and a few lakers. In Chicago, coho and kings are down around 95-feet. Perch action OK but not great at this stage of the season.

Fox Chain: Walleye action decent on Channel Lake. Similar activity on Pistakee Lake as well. Bluegill action very good in weed pockets on Channel Lake.

Cooling lakes: On Heidecke Lake, a few hybrid stripers are being taken, and smallmouth action is picking up. At LaSalle Lake, largemouth steady in first pool.

Busse Lake: Largemouth bass action started this week again near the main dam.

Skokie Lagoon: Excellent bluegill fishing on live bait and Mini-Mite jigs.
