Plans underway for 50th anniversary time capsule?

One way the village's youth commission plans to celebrate Hoffman Estates' 50th anniversary in 2008 is with a time capsule.

Monday, village trustees approved plans to spend $5,000 on the capsule, which would be opened after 25 years, in 2033, to celebrate the village's 75th anniversary.

The proposal is to seal the capsule -- which would be reusable -- within a boulder. A site has yet to be selected. Area students would be involved in the project.

Would you place a puck used in a Chicago Hounds hockey game in the capsule? How about a guitar pick or some other memento from the act that opens up the new Prairie Creek Music Theater? Apparently a company, Time Capsule 2000, is a business dedicated to this endeavor. Check out its Web site, timecapsule2k.com, to see what churches, schools and corporate entities have used the North Carolina firm.

Cop promotion: Police officer Darin Felgenhauer was promoted to sergeant Monday. He graduated in 1989 from Lockport Township High School, then went straight to the Marine corps, where he was a Russian linguist. After four years, he enrolled at Illinois State University and earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. In 1997 he joined the Hoffman Estates Police Department, and after about five years transferred to the tactical unit.

Unfortunately the cake served Monday in honor of Sgt. Felgenhauer's promotion had "sergeant" misspelled, but the swearing-in remained well attended and Felgenhauer garnered a deserved applause. Police Chief Clinton Herdegen pointed out there is a spelling component to police exams, and back in his day, "sergeant" was one of the words included. Oh, the irony.

I miss my Crayolas: Recently three lucky winners were awarded $15 gift certificates to Garibaldi's as part of the village art commission's coloring contest. The winners: Raina Williams, Dainey Vacco and Lance Rudek.

Congrats. I could never stay between the lines.
