Driscoll opens with easy win at Alleman

Beginning its pursuit of a seventh straight state championship, Driscoll opened the season with a 26-6 victory over Rock Island Alleman at Augustana College.

The Highlanders led 26-0 until Alleman scored with 46 seconds left in the game.

Driscoll took a 6-0 first-quarter lead on Tim Franken's 4-yard run. It went up 20-0 at half time on a 2-yard run by David Schwabe and an 18-yard pass from Schwabe to Joe Calabrese.

Franken, who finished with 11 carries for 135 yards, broke a 67-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Schwabe, playing his first game ever at quarterback, completed 13 of 17 passes for 160 yards and added 90 yards rushing.

His brother, Steve Schwabe, intercepted a pass, part of a Driscoll defense that yielded 99 total yards, 7 through the air.

Marmion 45, South Elgin 12:’What looked like would be a nip-and-tuck battle early took a turn for the worse for the South Elgin Storm football team as it lost 45-12 to Marmion on Friday night in nonconference action.

The long night began for the Storm on the third play of the game when wide receiver Joshua Smith fumbled the ball to the Cadets at his own 35-yard line.

The Cadets (1-0, 0-0) drove inside Storm territory by effectively mixing the running game and passing game as they culminated the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run by Lee Hinterlong for the game's first score.

The Storm (0-1, 0-0) answered with their own touchdown by quarterback Peter Scaffidi III on a 5-yard keeper but would miss the extra point making it 7-6.

The Cadets then rattled off 38 unanswered points by capitalizing on numerous opportunities at the expense of the Storm.

For Marmion coach Dan Thorpe it was a gratifying start to the season.

"We have a multiple option offense in the fact that we can both pass and run,Ȣ₈¬Ã‚ˆť Thorpe said. "Add in a bend-but-don't-break mentality on defense and I think that makes us a pretty good team."

In the scoring explosion the Cadets received 2 touchdowns a piece from quarterback Ricky Bird and running back Alex Cook.

"It was definitely our offense line tonight,Ȣ₈¬Ã‚ˆť Cook said. "That's what you expect when you return so many guys at the line positions.Ȣ₈¬Ã‚ˆť

The defense also chimed in with a touchdown by linebacker Jon Weber in the fourth quarter when he intercepted a Scaffidi pass and ran it back 25 yards for the score.

The Storm found its offense stymied until late in the fourth quarter when Scaffidi found Smith for a 42-yard score.

"Our defense got us four turnovers tonight and did their best to keep us in the game,"ˆť said Storm coach Dale Schabert. "We just didn't do the job on offense."ˆť
