Flute choir seeks flutists to audition

The Fox Valley Flutes, a flute choir for talented middle school and high school students, is holding auditions the rest of this month. Auditions will be held by appointment.

Fox Valley Flutes focuses on developing chamber ensemble skills with special emphasis on listening skills to improve intonation, phrasing, articulation and tone quality. Students will work on challenging repertoire and perform in concerts three times per year. Special community outreach concerts may also be planned.

In the event of an opening in the Fox Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra or the Fox Valley Academy Orchestra flute sections, members of the Fox Valley Flutes will have the first opportunity to audition to fill the position.

The ensemble is under the direction of Teresa Cowin Muir of Batavia, who teaches flute privately in Batavia. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, she came to Northwestern University for a bachelor of music degree and stayed to teach band and orchestra in the Yorkville and Batavia school districts. Muir has been a featured soloist with the Butler (Pa.) Symphony Orchestra and Fox Valley Concert Band. She performs with Opus 3 Woodwind Chamber Trio, directs the Batavia High School Flute Choir, and arranges the majority of repertoire for both groups. Other activities include playing flute and piccolo with the Fox Valley Philharmonic, and serving on board of directors of the Chicago Flute Club.

The Fox Valley Flutes rehearses on Sundays from 3 to 4 p.m. at Aurora Christian School, 2255 Sullivan Road in Aurora. The 2007-08 season is scheduled to begin Sept. 9 and conclude April 6, with a brief break at the holidays.

Students must be high school seniors or younger in the fall 2007. Details on eligibility requirements and audition procedures can be found on the group's Web site at www.fvyso.org.

The Fox Valley Flutes is part of The Fox Valley Academy of Music Performance, which includes the Fox Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra, Fox Valley Academy Orchestra, Fox Valley Youth Strings and the Access to Music program.
