Mundelein High opens Idol contest to all

Can you sing?

Or, better yet, do you think you can sing?

Then members of the Mundelein High School show choirs want to hear from you.

The choirs are holding a talent contest called Mundelein Idol, inspired by the hit TV show "American Idol." The top three contestants will get cash prizes.

The event will be staged Oct. 6 in the Mundelein High School auditorium, 1350 W. Hawley St.

The competition is open to anyone 19 or younger. Contestants do not need to attend Mundelein High or even live in the school district.

"Actually, anybody in the world can enter," said choirs director John Neubauer.

The final showdown will feature 16 singers. If more than 16 teens enter the contest, a preliminary round will be held Sept. 29 to narrow the field.

As of Wednesday, about six people had signed up, Neubauer said. More are expected.

Contestants can sing any style of music but must provide a CD with karaoke tracks for three songs. The songs should be less than 3½ minutes long.

The winner will be determined by an audience vote.

The first-place winner will get $500 and a trophy. Second place earns $50, while third place earns $25.

A brochure and application form are available on the school's Web site at www. mundeleinmustangs.com. A link to Mundelein Idol information is on the right side of the home page.

Participants must leave a $50 deposit when they sign up to reserve spots, but the money will be returned after the show, Neubauer said.

The deadline for applying for the event is September 22.
