Twin towers spark GBN past Blue Devils

Whoever plays Glenbrook North's girls volleyball team better beware of twin towers Jackie Marks and Amy Keding.

The 6-foot-1 Marks and the 6-foot Keding used their height and skill to help the Spartans defeat Warren 25-18, 25-20 in a nonconference match Tuesday night.

Marks led the offense with 6 kills, while also serving for 9 points, including 2 aces. She added 5 blocks.

Keding chipped in 4 kills, while leading the defense with 9 digs.

"I thought we did real well out there," Keding said. "We worked real well together on our passes."

The temperature inside the Glenbrook North gym was as hot as it was outside.

"Because of the storm, we lost our (electrical) power over the weekend, and it may have caused some problems with the ventilation system," Glenbrook North coach Chris Cooper said. "Hopefully we'll be able to turn the temperature down next match."

Maddy McAuliffe added 3 kills and 16 assists for Glenbrook North, while Jenna Wallis had 3 kills.

Warren was shorthanded, as seniors McKenna Hennelly and Colbi Thompson (ankle) were out due to injuries.

"It's early," Warren coach Julie Filippo said. "We're playing with the lineup a little bit, so we have some improving to do.

"I'm a little concerned with the amount of unforced errors," Filippo added. "But it goes back to practicing and getting focused."

Senior Amanda Rapp led the Blue Devils with 3 kills and 4 digs. She also served 7 of 11.

Senior Missy Ceisel, who is coming back from a pre-season injury, served 3 aces. She also chipped in 2 kills and 5 assists. Sarah Miles added a pair of aces, and Lindsey Goad had 4 assists for the Blue Devils.

In both games, Warren (0-2) started off with an early lead, but Glenbrook North (1-1) came back.

In the opener, the teams were tied 11-11 until the Spartans had a 14-7 run to win the game.

The second game was tied 17-17 until Marks and Keding had consecutive kills to start an 8-3 run for the match.

"We could have talked a lot more," Rapp said. "I think we can come together and we will practice hard tomorrow for Friday."
