Lonergan, Toczek boost Antioch to win over Harvard

Behind 9 kills and 5 digs from Katie Lonergan and 9 kills and 7 blocks from Megan Toczek, Antioch outlasted Harvard in three games by scores of 30-28, 18-25, 25-17 in nonconference action Thursday night.

Martha Arntson added 8 blocks and Katie Smiley tallied 7 digs for the Sequoits.

Woodstock d. Grayslake N.: Woodstock swept Grayslake North 25-13, 25-18 in Fox Valley Conference action.

Michelle Quigley led the Knights with 3 kills and was 6-of-6 on her serves.

Meanwhile, Megan Falk had 15 digs and setter Kaitlyn Klausner had 4 assists for Grayslake North.

Richmond-Burton d. Lakes: Lakes lost another close match, this time to Richmond-Burton, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25.

Mandy Fischer and Kathy Szczesniak led the way for the Eagles with 4 kills apiece while teammate Katie Thompson had 7 digs and Steffanie Fisher had 3 aces.

Cross country

Grant boys, girls prevail: In a meet that also featured Round Lake, Harvard and Richmond-Burton, Grant came away with first-place finishes on both the boys and the girls side.

Boys soccer

Grayslake N. 3, Antioch 1: Grayslake North moved to 3-0 on the season with the victory.

The Knights got 2 goals from sophomore Julio Zamora and the other from senior Jeremy Leanna.

Meanwhile, Grayslake North goalie Josh Larson tallied 5 saves.

Niles W. 5, Vernon Hills 1: Josh Zappeda got Vernon Hills' only goal. It was unassisted. Cougars goalkeeper Philip Maciaszek had 10 saves.

Girls tennis

Libertyville 4, Vernon Hills 3: The Wildcats narrowly edged Vernon Hills thanks to a strong performance in doubles action.

Libertyville won three of four doubles contests, including the No. 1 match.

Hanna Movy and Emily Paul of Libertyville swept Liza Xu and Colleen Rhoades 6-4, 6-3.

Stephanie Borgman of Vernon Hills defeated Sharon Lo in the No. 1 singles match 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.

Carmel 5, St. Joseph 0: Not only did Carmel not lose a match, it didn't lose a set.

Lauren Aguilar led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Laurn Connor in the No. 1 singles match.

Glenbrook N. 6, Stevenson 1: Sema Kovalevskaya got Stevenson's only victory.

She defeated Rachel Welch in the No. 3 singles match 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

Girls golf

Carmel d. Nazareth: Thanks in part to a 42 from Stephanie Zdon, Carmel got a victory over Nazareth, 176-219.

Shannon Howell got a 44 for the Corsairs while teammates Jacqueline Jaskowiak and Katie Kelly finished with 45s.

Deerfield d. Libertyville: Despite a 41 from medalist Alex Hein, Libertyville lost to Deerfield 190-192 in its season opener.

Ashley Falasz finished with a 44 for the Wildcats.

Boys golf

Antioch d. Wauconda: Antioch got its second win in three tries by defeating Wauconda, 174-183.

Lucas McClain led the way for the Sequoits with a 42 while teammates Scott Holley, Chris Burton and Kyle Sonnenburg each finished with 44s.

Wauconda was led by Henry Manaldan, who tallied a 44.

Lakes d. Vernon Hills: Lakes edged Vernon Hills 171-179, thanks in part to a 40 by Jon Schultz.

Vernon Hills was led by Daniel Downey, who finished with a 37.

Prairie Ridge d. Grayslake N.: At Renwood, Grayslake North fell to Prairie Ridge, 149-181.

Ryan O'Malley led the Knights with a 41 while teammate Sean Humphrey finished with a 44.

Lake Forest d. Lake Zurich: Lake Forest had four golfers finish with scores in the 30s in a 155-166 victory over Lake Zurich.

Peter Marshall led the way for Lake Forest with a 38.

For Lake Zurich, both Tommy Paulson and Logan Kearney turned in 40s.
