Old Town School to mark 50th with big name concert

The Old Town School of Folk Music celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with what is being billed as an all-star concert, set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Auditorium Theatre, that will represent the institution's past and present stature in presenting folk and world beat music.

Jeff Tweedy of Wilco headlines along with Byrds founder Roger McGuinn (an Old Town alum), bluegrass innovator Bela Fleck, songwriter Bonnie Koloc, Old Town School founder Frank Hamilton plus Chicago notables such as Robbie Fulks, Jon Langford, Kelly Hogan, Sally Timms, Nicholas Tremulis, father-son blues partners Lonnie and Wayne Baker Brooks and many others.

The Old Town School took its name from the Chicago neighborhood where it opened in 1957 but in recent years moved to a larger secondary space in the Lincoln Square neighborhood, where it routinely hosts concerts and seasonal classes. The school will host an open house and community dance at that location Nov. 3.

Tickets go on sale 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Ticketmaster by calling (312) 559-1212 or in person at the Auditorium box office, 50 E. Congress Parkway, Chicago. Tickets are priced from $250 to $35. Visit oldtownschool.org
