Hoffman Estates man charged with DUI after 2 wrecks

A man was arrested in Hoffman Estates after police said he crashed his Volvo into two vehicles while drunk and then punched a man before running home.

Michael Vaughn, 34, of 540 Durham Lane in Hoffman Estates, was charged with DUI, battery and leaving the scene of an accident, Sgt. Jim Campbell said Friday.

Police said Vaughn was driving his 1998 Volvo on Sept. 7 when he struck a 2006 Toyota at Durham Lane and Ashley Road, a few blocks from his home. He then continued driving before hitting a parked Ford truck, Campbell said.

According to police, Vaughn then got out of his car and punched a witness who confronted him. The victim, a man in his 30s, was struck in the chest but didn't need a hospital transport, Campbell said.

Police later arrested Vaughn at his home. He also was charged with no valid driver's license, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and no proof of insurance, Campbell said. He was given an Oct. 1 court date.
