Round up: Green Wave breaks through with a win

The St. Edward boys soccer team finally got into the win column Tuesday.

The Green Wave (1-10, 1-0) opened the Suburban Catholic Conference season with their first win of the campaign, downing Driscoll 6-0.

Jim Cholewa scored twice for the Wave while Miguel Martinex had a goal and 3 assists. Lucas Belcher and David Baley each had a goal, Clayton Pfeiffer had a goal and an assist and Alex Ptak and Chris Lenard each had assists. Will Lytle defended the St. Edward goal and made 2 saves.

Boys Soccer

Wheaton North 8, Westminster 1: The Warriors (3-6-3) suffered a tough nonconference loss to Wheaton North. Dan Graves scored Westminster's only goal on an assist from Ryan Beachler. Collecting 15 saves in goal for the Warriors was Ethan Flickinger.

Huntley 4, Crystal Lake Central 1: In the Fox Valley (Fox) Conference the Red Raiders (5-6, 2-2) defeated Crystal Lake Central. Nico Carbonara led Huntley to victory with a hat trick, with all 3 goals assisted by Jesus Alejos. Adrian Alejos also scored for the Red Raiders on an assist from Jesus Alejos. Kevin Montelongo was in goal for Hunltey and collected 13 saves.

Prairie Ridge 2, Grayslake Central 1: Alex Sauciuc scored the game-winning goal 5 minutes into overtime to life Prairie Ridge to this Fox Valley (Fox) win. Marcelo Jorge, with an assist from Sauciuc, scored the other goal for the Wolves (4-8-1, 2-2). A.J. Sturm had 9 saves in goal for PR.

East Aurora 4, Larkin 3: Edgar Mondragon, Lucas Maldonado and Misa Hernandez scored goal for Larkin (8-3, 2-1) fell for the first time in Upstate Eight play. Razel Somarriba was in goal for the -Royals.

Dundee-Crown 5, Woodstock 3: Christian Meza scored twice as the Chargers (5-4-1, 2-2) notched a Fox Valley (Valley) victory. Ricky Garcia, Eugene Zau and Ryan Merkel also scored for D-C while Wyatt Zucici and Zau had assists. Mike Zozokos made 15 saves in goal for the Chargers.

Bartlett 2, South Elgin 1: Joe McCullough and Doug DiGiovanni each scored goals and DiGiovanni had an assist as the Hawks (4-5-1, 1-2) won this Upstate Eight game. James Hollander scored for the Storm, assisted by Alex Walter. Vince Dinuzzo defended the goal for Bartlett and made 6 saves while Luis Abonce had 8 saves for South Elgin (3-6, 0-3).

Hampshire 3, Richmond 1: Shay Hauck, Junior Makinde and Dustin Sundquist scored goals as the Whip-Purs (9-2, 3-2) won this Big Northern East game. Jose Lopez had 2 assists and Hauck one for Hampshire, which got 6 saves from goalie Cameron Roth.

Football

Elgin High School Boosters post-game gathering: On Friday night, the Elgin High School Booster Club will host a post-game gathering at Rolling Knolls Country Club in Elgin immediately following the homecoming football game against Waubonsie Valley. All are welcome. The first 20 people there will receive a gift.

On Oct. 27, the "E" Booster Club presents "Booster Bonanza III -- Masquerade," a silent auction and buffet dinner from 7 to 11:30 p.m. at the Rolling Knolls Country Club in Elgin. Costumes are optional. Proceeds benefit all Elgin High athletes.

Boys golf

Prairie Ridge d. Huntley: Robinson Logue and Tyler Benson each shot 34s. Mike Ungari had a 35 and Kyle Sherman a 37 as the Wolves defeated Huntley 140-178 at Prairie Isle. The 140 set a school record for low round for PR, breaking the mark of 141 set in 2003. Alex Zielinski, Taylor Brown and Nate Huxtable each had 44s for Huntley.

Men's Soccer

Prairie State 1, ECC 0: The Spartans (1-4) fell to Prairie State College in a ISCC match. Joe Ruffalo was in goal and collected 5 saves. for ECC.

Women's volleyball

St. Xavier d. Judson: Battling the CCAC opponent St. Xavier University, the Judson University volleyball team (6-10, 2-1) fell in four games, 30-28, 25-30, 30-32, 21-30.

Senior Erin Bultinck led the Eagles with 14 kills while senior Kym Gagnon had 13. Danielle Dull added 10. Freshman Carly Campioni recorded 42 assists and Debra Leganski had 16 digs. Both Dull and Alesha Flikkema added 6 blocks.

JU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after game one with a 30-28 win. The Eagles hit .361 with 17 kills in the game. In game two, SXU took an early 9-2 lead and JU never recovered as they only hit .024 with eight kills.

Game three was the turning point in the match as SXU took a 32-30 win. JU tied the game at 30 before SXU won the next two serves. JU battled in game four but could not catch SXU after they took an early seven-point lead.
