Aurora Central can't keep up with St. Francis

Aurora Central Catholic may have scored first on Saturday afternoon, but St. Francis answered quickly with a score and then just kept on scoring and scoring and scoring.

When all was said and done, the Spartans had piled up 564 yards of offense in a 51-28 homecoming victory over the visiting Chargers (1-4, 1-2).

The Spartans scored touchdowns on their first six possessions, including four by running back Stan Bobowski who finished with 176 yards on 22 carries and 26 points (4 TDs and a 2-point conversion run).

"It was nice," Bobowski calmly said of his team's 35-point first-half explosion highlighted by scoring runs of 14, 39, 8 and 2 yards by the junior back. "We practiced really hard this week and the offensive line did a great job. They blocked crazy all day."

The front line, led by Nicolas Simoncelli and Dan Herr, had its way with the Chargers defense. Mark Kachmer added 174 yards and 1 TD to Bobowski's huge numbers as the Spartans ran for 439 yards as a team while amassing their 564 yards of total offense.

"I'm just glad our kids got a win," said St. Francis coach Greg Purnell, whose team suffered a one-sided loss last week to conference power Driscoll. "They're improving. We're feeling better about it."

ACC, led by quarterback Mike Adams and his brother Mark Adams, a wide out, struck first on Saturday after St. Francis (2-3, 1-2) fumbled a punt return less than 2 minutes into the contest. Mike Adams capped the 26-yard drive with a 1-yard keeper for a 7-0 lead. Later Mike Adams would connect with his brother for a 14-yard TD pass, while Chad Roscoe added a pair of rushing scores for the Chargers.

But the 28 points would fall way short on a day in which the Spartans put 5 touchdowns on the board in the first half and added two more in the second half along with a safety to surpass the 50-point plateau.

"We can't stop anybody. We can't tackle," ACC coach Mike Curry said. "We made some adjustments at halftime and did a little better in the second half, but until we're able to stop third-and-five and third-and-four…it's sad."

Despite the warm conditions and all the action on offense, Bobowski helped the St. Francis defense somewhat contain the Adams tandem. He recorded a key sack and almost intercepted a pass while playing on both sides of the ball.

"It's great to get a win, especially on homecoming," said Bobowski, who recorded his first 4-touchdown game. "We have a new system (on offense) and now everybody's getting into it."
