Briefs: Butera takes over Piggly Wiggly

ELGIN -- Paul Butera, owner of Butera Market, received the final go ahead to acquire the balance of outstanding shares of Certified Holdings Inc., an entity formed in 2005 to take the then public Fresh Brands Inc. private. Fresh Brands Inc. supplies 95 corporate and franchise stores operating under the Piggly Wiggly trade name in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. Butera is a longtime member of Certified Grocers Midwest based in Hodkins, Ill., which supplies independent grocers. Butera also serves as CEO and chairman of the board for Fresh Brands as well as chairman of both Certified Grocers Midwest and the Butera Market chain of 10 stores headquartered in Elgin.

New practice group helping truckers

ST. CHARLES -- Wessels & Pautsch launched a new practice group to advise Illinois construction trucking companies on how to stay out of trouble when using independent contractors. The company's Nancy Joerg said a new law in Illinois goes into effect Jan. 1 that construction and trucking companies who use independent contractors must follow.
