Crash kills Roselle man

A local man died Wednesday afternoon when his car crashed into a utility pole in Roselle and ended up standing almost upright on its rear bumper.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the victim as a 70-year-old Roselle man. His identity was being withheld pending family notification.

Roselle police Sgt. John Lawson said late Wednesday authorities were waiting for toxicology tests and autopsy results to determine whether the man's health contributed to the crash on the 800 block of Nerge Road near Plum Grove Road.

But based on information witnesses gave to police, the man's car was traveling northwest through the parking lot of the Mutual Bank on Nerge Road very quickly.

It then crossed Plum Grove Road and struck a wooden Village of Roselle sign near the intersection of Plum Grove and Nerge, he said.

It appeared the car rode up on the electrical guy wire.

"That's how it ended in that position," Lawson said. "When they removed the car, you could see the guy wire."

The man was pronounced dead at 12:41 p.m.

No other cars were involved in the crash. Emergency vehicles remained at the scene for at least three hours.
