Kids show spirit on Clash Day

Maine East High School's homecoming week kicked off recently with Clash Day where kids did their best to mismatch their ensembles.

Polka dots and stripes were favorites among the crowd of teens, as well as mismatched socks. Some kids wore Cubs and Sox clothes together.

Students were asked to express themselves by showing off amazing made-at-home outfits. There was also an all-school kick-off assembly to demonstrate school spirit.

"Everybody wore something different that didn't match," said Natalie Bourn, head student council sponsor.

Clash Day was part of a push to ignite more school spirit at Maine East, she said.

Principal Steve Isoye had challenged the faculty to be models of school spirit with the idea that the kids would follow, she said.

Clash Day was all part of a week-long celebration that culminated in a "A Fairy Tale Homecoming," which was the dance's theme this year.

Throughout the week, students participated during specific days with particular themes, including a "Day of Disney Wonders" where students dressed as their favorite Disney characters.

Then, on another day there was "Color Wars" with freshmen in yellow, sophomores in purple, juniors in green, seniors in black and faculty in blue. On Spirit Day, kids were asked to wear school colors -- blue and white.
