Police catch robbery suspect

A Mount Prospect man will be charged today with bank robbery after he slipped a note to a teller demanding money on Thursday morning, an FBI agent said.

The man will be handed over to the FBI in Chicago by Mount Prospect police, who apprehended the man after he fled the bank on a bicycle, said Ross Rice, special agent and spokesman for the FBI in Chicago.

Police said a Mount Prospect man took an undisclosed amount of money from First Bank, 2100 S. Elmhurst Road. The man told a teller he had a weapon, but none was seen, Rice said.

After the robbery, the man was last seen heading south of the bank, riding a bicycle and wearing khaki cargo pants and a dark fleece top.

While canvassing the area, police found a witness who reported that the robber may have come into a local business to use a phone.

Police checked the last number called from the business, and it was listed to a store located several blocks away.

While officers continued to search the area, unmarked police units set up surveillance around the store.

At 11:57 a.m., a person matching the offender's description entered the store's parking lot on foot.

He was held at the scene, where he was positively identified as the offender by bank employees, police said. No weapon was found on the man, Rice said.
