Judson, ECC women win openers

Judson University's women's basketball team opened the season Saturday with an upset.

The Eagles won their fifth straight season opener by knocking off No. 11 ranked Taylor University 61-55.

Kristen Johns and Marissa Marshall led the Eagles with 12 points each. Alicia Rovertoni led both teams in rebounding with 10.

Down by 11 points at the half Judson slowly worked its way back into the game. The Eagles limited Taylor to just 6 field goals in the second half and forced 19 turnovers.

Dundee-Crown graduate Rhiannan Edwardsen scored 4 points for Taylor.

Women's basketball

ECC 56, Triton 41: Elgin Community College opened it season with a victory over Triton. De'Larissa Morris led the Spartans with 16 points. Meaghan Staley-Gamble collected 11 points, while teammate Ariana Topps added 11 points. Angelia Gafford added 10 points for the Spartans.

Women's Volleyball

MCC to nationals: The McHenry County Scots (39-7) advanced to the NJCAA national tournament, at Scottsdale, Community College in Arizona Nov 15-17, with a three-game win over Kankakee 30-21, 30-13, 30-19. The Scots were ranked No. 14 in the final NJCAA Division II poll. Scots receiving all-tournament honors were Shaela Hayden, Lindsey Loesher, and Amanda Pagels.

MCC is led by first-year coach Chas Kennedy who was named NJCAA D II, Region IV, District B Coach of the Year following the tournament.

Men's basketball

Aquinas College 69, Judson University 64: The Eagles fell short in their season-opener as Aquinas College came from behind to defeat Judson 69-64. Steffan Williams and DeWayne Robinson led Judson with 14 points each. Ilija Bojanic added 12 points while teammate Justen Boyd had 8 assists.
